VICTORIA v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA

ADELAIDE, November 6;

South Australia in the second innings lost five wickets for 138. Crawford not out 51, C. Hill not out 28, were the top scorers.

In their first innings-the South. Australians made 305, Victoria responding with 265.

From 1898 to 1903 Victoria won all ten matches plaved; hilt South Australia has since won eight out of 14. It- is five years since Victoria last succeeded at Adelaide, and yet in the last match at Melbourne the home team won by an innings and 87 runs. The highest individual innings in this series stands to George Giffcn’s credit viz., 271—compiled 21 years ago. In the same year, but a season earlier, G.G. also made 237, these being the only 200’s for South Australia in- the matches. Victoria’s highest is 231. by W. W. Armstrong, who has made five hundreds. For ..outli Australia, Clem Hill has made eight centuries against Victoria, viz.; 135, 126 not out. 1 24 . 1 4 7,111 npt out, 191, 176, and 185. J. J. Lyons and George Giffeu each made six centuries, the big nitter having played] some wonderful innings. Dr H. V. Hordern is now (says the Referee) bowling in good form, and by the time the Englishmen come along he will probably bo at his top. Tile Bosie, artist captured four for 65 against the University, three f0r.47 against Sydney, and six for 70 and two for 16 against Bur wood, so that he .is gradually tuning up the arm and fingers to their work. V-' Should it be found that W. J.-:Whitty -is not-able to »db justice to himself ha a bowler this season, R; J- Massic, ought to ihe brought to the front, with "a- view to | his playing in. the Teat matches'." 1 He is [already a very, fine bowler; and;,with the ' same experience that Whitty has had, will become a champion. Massie is-6ft 4in in height; delivers high, keeps a length, has a variety of balls—fast, slow, and a good yorker—-does something unexpectedly from the leg/and is flighty, the wind helping him considerably. His knowledge of the game haS developed with every match, and in his' present i form he is worth a place in any cricket team.
