' An application has been made to the Arbitration Court for the; commitment of the warrants against tho men fined at Lithgow. ; It is stated that negotiations for a settlement of tlie strike are proceeding. The matter has been adjourned for a week.- ” THE MT. LYELL STRIKE. Another Abortive Conference. Engineers and Firemen Co Out. Received November 7, 9.10 a.m. MELBOURNE, November 7. Another conference between the Mount Lyell directors and representatives of the strikers .proved futile. After a short discussion, the directors announced that they were not prepared to deal with the miners while the threat of an engine-drivers’ strike existed. The conference adjourned till Wednesday. Subsequently all tlie engineers, firemen, and miners, numbering 130, were ordered out, and they ceased work. Besides stopping the mines. Hie electric lighting of the town is cut off. CLERKS’ UNION FORMED. Received November 7, 10.30 a.m. ; SYDNEY, November 7. As an outcome of the wharf labourers’ strike,;a meeting of clerks adopted a resolution in favour of the formation of a ;: Clerks’ -Union- and. that any future” request for them to do work other than that for which they are engaged will be refused.;. The resolutions were forwarded to the steamship owners and the Wharf Labourers’ Union, with a request for the latter’s co-operation. TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES’ DEMANDS. (.Per -United Press Association.) i WELLINGTON, November 7. Tlie Conciliation ‘ Council is considering in committee to-day the tramway employees’ demands. The Commission is of opinion that there are good prospects of a settlement satisfactory to both sides.
