SUNDAY SCHOOL WORK.

MR. NEWTON JONES’S VISIT. Sunday School teachers and workers of Wanganui who through the inclemency of the weather or other causes were unable to attend the various meetings conducted on Saturday evening and yesterday by the Eev. Newton Jones, who is touring the colonies in the interests of the, Sunday School Union, missed a very great deal that would have been most useful to them in Sunday School work. '.Mr Jones’ address in Trinity Wesleyan Schoolroom on Saturday evening was' mi inspiration to teachers. In eloquent and earnest tones the visitor spoke of the needs of both scholars and teachers, and gave some very excellent advice to teachers in their attitude to the children in their several classes and on the conduct of the various departments of school work. The part the church should play in the Sunday School was also emphasised, Mr Jones remarking that the church should equip the teachers and the schools with whatever they required. The speaker used the blackboard to illustrate his address; aiid his opinion as to the great value of blackboard work in- connection with Sun-' day Schools was endorsed by all present. A combined service in the Gonville Hall on Sunday morning was addressed by Mr Jones, and proved most intcrestiffg. In the afternoon a children's service was held in St. Paul’s Church, where another most interesting and impressive address was given, while in the same building at 8.30 Mr Jones gave an eloquent discourse to teachers and others, basing his remarks on the text, “Come, for all things arc now ready.” At each of the services Mr S.' Victor’'Jones, who is the possessor of a- sweet baritone voice, contributed sacred solos, while special hymn-sheets were provided for the nse of the congregations in the chorus singing. This afternoon Mr Newton , Jones was to give a “Chalk Talk to Children” in Trinity Schoolroom, and in the same place to-night, at 7.30, the mission will be concluded by a lecture on “Bags.” A collection will be taken up on behalf of Sunday School work in the Argentine, whither Mr Jones and his son go when they conclude their New Zealand visit in a fortnight.
