November % Work on the /tracks this morning was of the useful order. Madam Madcap ran Half a mile strongly in 51 secs., and Nvland boat Boanerges over six in 1.17 1-5. Kilostere decisively beat Goodwin Park over a -mile in 1.461, which is a great improvement on yesterday’s gallop. Ermcngarde boat Undecided and Rangiatna over half a mile in 49 3-5.' Royal Scotch easilv beat Midnight Sun over six in 1.16. Kauroa was bleeding after his work Monday, and has done little since. Countermine is lame, and is a doubtful starter in the Stewards. THE NEW ZEALAND CUP. BY “ACHILLES.’’ The C.J.C. Spring Meeting opens to-mor-row, when the New Zealand Cup will be decided. There is every prospect oi the great spring carnival at Kiccarton being as successful, if not more so, than any of its • predecessors. The field for the big evcnt'promises to be a fairly largo one, 15 having made the final payments. It is contended that, as far as class is concerned, the field will be a weak one, but the same sort of thing is said every year, and it is quite on the cards that the race will prove a surprise to those ,who think that quality is not well represented. The top weight, Los Angelos, has heaps' of admirers, and is said to be really well. He should run a big race, notwithstanding that last’ year' he faded at the end of journey. 'Merrivonia is much fancied m some quarters, and if she is able to reproduce the form she displayed in the last Wanganui Cun she must take a lot of beating, although she has not performed too well recently. Prim lias pleased the ..‘critics at Riccarton, and is being strongly supported. The daughter of Pilgrim’s Progress demonstrated that she could run a very fast mile and a half last November, when she Cut out the distance in 2min 34 2-ssec in winning the Metropolitan. Last Easter she ran second to Cheddar in the. Great Autumn, carrying 8.5. These performances suggest that* she ought.to stay out the extra half mile all right, in which case she must be very dau-
gerous. Iranui, 7.12, has yet to prove her ability to win a race over any distance beyond DF miles,- Marline-is- a stable mate of Prim’s, and her chance is held in great respect by many. She won the Oaks last year in 2min 36 4-ssec. Domino has been quietly supported by a number of Aucklanders. ‘ The son of Freedom has been a ?ood performer up to a mile and a quarer, and his friends reckon he will stay the .distance out all right. Yicc-Admiral is one of the favourites for the race. He is credited with having nut up some great gallops on the track prior to running in the Metropolitan at the recent A.J.C. meeting. In the race itself he was very prominent for the greater part of the journey, and a splendid judge who saw that race tells mo that he looks to the son of Multiform as sure to put up a big performance to-morrow. Miscount has been showing good form at Riccarton, and should run well. Goodwin Park is the hope of many backers up this way. Ho is said to be a horse with only one run, but be this as it may, he can muster up a great turn of pace when he does get going. Fred Tilley’s many friends would like to see the son of Sylvia Park score the third win in New Zealand Cups for the popular Fordell trainer. Mulga Rill is given a big chance by Hawera sports, and with his light weight it mav he that he will effect a surprise. Kilostere was galloping in attractive style at the end of the distance in the Higgie Handicap at the recent Wanganui meeting, and finisb,bd second to Goodwin Park in the Wainui Handicap at Trentham. The son of Kilcheran impressed the writer as one likely to stay well by the way be shaped here, and it would come as no surprise should he run very prominently to-morrow. Kau■roa had some friends who expected him to run prominently, but latest news to hand is not very reassuring as to his chance. Altogether the result looks very open, and tjie race should be a good one. Great interest will also he taken in the Stewards’ Handicap, for which a big field will go to the post. There is everv likelihood of Equitas starting a warm favourite. though Madam Madcap, Royal Scotch. Dazzling,* Bliss, Sea- King, and Nylaud have all shown fine form recently, and have many friends.
THE Y.R.C. MEETING
The spring carnival of the Victoria Racing Club opens to-morrow at Flemington. when the principal events to be decided will be the Maribyrnong Plate, the V.R.C Derby, and the Melbourne Stakes. In the .former Mr E. J. Watt’s filly Ventura is . there would be much rejoicing in Now Zealand should the Hawke’s Bav sportsman’s representative score. The race for the Melbourne Stakes, a weight-for-age race over 1J miles should be one worth going miles to see; as Trafalgar. Malt King, Comedv King, and Lady Medallist will be amongst the starters. On Tuesday the Melbourne Cup will 'be run, and in this event Mr E. J. Watt, will be represented by Bridge, the winner of the last New Zealand Cup, and it will be interesting to see if he can put the seal op his fame by placing the biggest rac> iB Australasia to his credit.
