HAYDN BECK FUND.

REPORTS OF PROGRESS. A general meeting, of the Haydn Beck committee was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Monday afternoon, Mr Louis Cohen being ,in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mr Lee Martin, secretary, and confirmed, and satisfactory reports of progress were made by the various members of the committee. It was decided to organise a strong ladies’ committee to aid the abject. Mr Ralph O’Hara kindly consented to arrange ’and superintend a series of Sunday concerts, and on the motion of Mr Bertram Yeates it was resolved to hold a novelty “open air” entertainment on the same lines as that recently carried out by Mr Hugh Ward so successfully in Wellington for the Hospitals Fund. Mr Follett reported that he had made arrangements on behalf of the art union committee to erect a tent on the show ground for the display of prizes and the selling _of tickets. After various minor details had been dealt with the meeting adjourned until next Monday.

Already the sale has been rapid. The first prize is a magnificent Grand (upright) pianoforte, built in richest Italian walunt case, with massive carvings on the front panels. The artistice carving, disnlayed on this instrument, on view at H. Collier and Co. s, is by the well-known art instructor of the Technical College, and is executed in German Ecnnaisanoe style. ‘ With a medallion of Mozart, both the upper - id lower panels are embellished with artistically designed cupids, fruit and foliage. The winner of this will indeed be fortunate. Besides this there are nineteen other valuable prizes, including the magnificent oil painting, “Dusky Sound,” by Mr H. W. Kirkwood, and another valuable oil painting by Mr C. H. Howarth. The drawing of this great value giving art. union is fixed for the Ist December, and it is to be hoped that the public will liberal!” respond to make the endeavour a complete success. As it has been decided 'to ask the Mayoress to call a meeting of lady sympathisers in the obiect, it is hoped that a large number will be present at the Borough Council Chambers to-morrow afternoon next at three o’clock.
