{•resident: 11. M. Payne; vice-presi-dents, I). McFarlane and H. W. Cooper; hon. sec. and treasurer: D. Robtos; executive committee; A. H. E. Wail, M.8., J. E- Triinen, L. J. Fume, RIM Ashcroft, F. C. Jannings, W. Penball, M. E. Turner. ■ Following the the report to be presented at tile second annua, general meeting to he’held-in the Borough'Connoil Chambers ’■•B p.m. on .Thursday, 2nd November, 1911: .... In, presenting: the second annual report your executive,' committee' have much pleasure in noting .that activity and vance, has v thc dominant note dnv- - . ing the past season, -. . . . The balance-sheet discloses a very satisfactory, state of finances,, showing an excess of assets over liabilities of .£ll 13s 7d. The most important event of the year was the visit of Mr William, Hepry, chief secretary of the society, who .spent November TOtm and 11th, 1910, in onr town. His coming had been looked forvya-rd, to v gll Interested in the. society’s work; and his unfailing courtesy and , pleasing personality made for him many friends. His presence gave _ much promineilce aiid impetus to this head centre, and the result has been that many mole .candb dates have'' submitted themselves; - .forexamination . than'during our first year of work. Mr Henry was very busy during’ his short ; stay among ns. He met members in, conference on the evening of November 10th, and gave much practical advice. On the evening of November 11th he. delivered an address ;in ■ St. Hall to a large audience. He conducted examinations for the society's awards; and l>y reason Of the' powers vested in him bv the central executive iii London he constituted this a head centre to control examinations; and grant awards in the territory known as the Wanganui Centre of the N.Z.A.S.A. The departure of Messrs A. F. Bignell and B. Bassett from Wahgainii during the- year deprived us of two very enthusiastic workers. Mr Bignell’s place as hon. sec. and treasurer was filled by. the appointment of Mr D. Robbins, and Mr Bassett’s seat; oh the executive committee was filled by the election of Mr' Mi E. Turner.
The Head Centre has considerably extended its sphere of practical usefulness, and widened. its range of. influence, thereby nromotinof more widespread knowledge of life saving. The following clubs and sfeliools are now : affiliated;:—Wanganui Amateur Swimming Club, Victoria Amateur Swimming Club, Castlecliff Surf Bathers’ and Life Saving Club; . Wanganui; Collegiate .School, Wanganui Girls’ College,' Wanganui District High School, Queen’s Park School. Hurworth SchoolWanganui East School. This Head Centre has -joined the other Head Centres of the Dominion in a- petition to 'the Minister of Education prayin'! - that instruction in life-saving in- accort*ance - with the societyja ..hand-book , shall he taught in .all. tKgbpubliA schools - in which swimming is taught, and that students in -the training colleges for teflehm's shall be required to make themselves efficient in the society’s methods while they are at those institutions. Mr H. M.' Payhe visited Taranaki during. January last, and tried to interert swimmers at Hawcra, Eitham. Stratford, Triglew'ood,.. and New Plymouth. At the last-meht.ioiM ! ;place\a detached class was formed , afid■'About a fortnight later an’ examination was hold and several awards wore made. Since then Messrs W.- Lints and F. G.: Morris’have the work going ;and„.,Jiavc been .. Instrumental in several more’ awards being made.
Directions for sarin? life from drowning , have been mounted on stiff board and distributed to all public baths and beach bathing 'sheds in the district. We greet with pleasure the generous aid to- be given by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, which has insructed; its centres to hand to the head ’ centres of the B.L.S.S. operating in their districts the, money voted to the humane branch. This , grant will be very-accept-able, as the head centre is anxious to bxtend its work as much as possible, and for this purpose funds are necessary, in this connection we wish to point out" that anyone may become an individual member for an annual subscription of 2s 6d, an lion; member for lbs 6d, an annual governor for £1 Is, a life member for £5 ss, and a life governor for,M 0 lbs. We bop? there are many in this community who ; will.-help the Society in its humane work by .becoming not less than individual members. '
The popularity of surf-bathing.'-"among persons of both sexes and all ages has resulted in the formation of a Surf Club for the protection of bathers on the ocean ;beacb at CastlecliS. Twenty-five awards of the K.E.S.S. have been gained during the past season-by members Of this Surf Club, and the fact that- the members are undergoing-the, examinations in life-savirig should, gain dor them the confidence of the; public.
