The celebrated Marawhenua gold mining case has been concluded in the Court of Appeal, but the Court intimated that judgment would not be given probably till the nexc Court meet.
AUCKLAND. December 8
The Citzens' Ball in honor of the Governor last night, was attended by 200 ladies and gentlemen. In replying to the toast of his health, the Marquis of Normanby said that the English form of Government was the best system of republic, and he entertained no fear of difficulty between the the Colony and Great Britain. He would take the first opportunity for travelling the Colony from end to end Sir George Arney made an excellent speech, and referred to the character and services of Sir George Grey in most eulogistic terms, as a man whose name we should look back with pride upon. Weather cloudy, but will probably clear off before to-morrow, as present appearance is more encouraging than early in the morning. The Governor proceeds south from Manukau on Thursday morning. Mr Buckland reports fat cattle 25s to 27s 6d per lOOlbs; sheep, 3d to 3£d per lb.
WANGANUI. December S
Mr Freeman R. Jackson sold on Friday 1000 sheep and 70 store cattle. Ewes with lambs, in wool, fetched from 17s to 355; hoggets, from 10s 6d to 21s 6d. Seventy two-tooth Lincoln rams sold at £8 to £S 2s Gd ; imported ram, £2l. For the cattle the following prices were realised:—Yearlings, £2 7s 6d ; two-year-old heifers, £3 7s 6d ; eighteen month steers, £-l< 2s 6d ; bullocks, £5; cows, £o 2s Gd. The cattle were mostly bought for shipment. A good many buyers were present, but there was little competition. The sheep did not realise satisfactory prices.

Mr C. C, Bowen sat as Resident Magistrate on the Christchurcfa bench for the last time on Thursday, when the members of the legal profession assembled in a body, and through Mr P. S. Duncan, President of the Law Society in Canterbury, tendered an expression of regret at his retirement from the Bench. They expressed earnest wishes for his success iu his new sphere of action, also [remarking that, knowing Mr Boweu as others did not know him, they felc confident that a very short time would suffice to show him to be the right man in the right place as Minister of Justice. Subscription lists are opened for presenting him with a public testimonial, and a large amount has already been subscribed,

Messrs Brown and Son quote grain of all sorts as firmer Wheat, good to prime, 5s to 5s Gd ; oats, scarce and wanted, 5s Gd to 6s ; barley, 4s Cd to 5s 3d ; flour, advanced, £l3 to 13 10s ; pollard, £6 10s ; bran, £o 10s.
