FAST TROTTING IN AMERICA.

A short time ago we recorded tlio achievement of Governor's Stanford's marvellous Californian horse Occident, which did the mile in 2min. lGfsec, thus beating the celebrated Goldsmith j Maid by half-a-second of time. Occident's great feat occurred in July last,

at the Sacramento State Fair. Since then Goldsmith Maid has retrieved her laurels. American files state that on September 2, at Mystic Park, Boston, the Maid completed her mile in 2min. 14sec. The scene is described as having been brilliant in the extreme. An immense crowd was present, and the wildest enthusiasm displayed. The Maid was driven by Dudd Doble, accompanied by the running mare Jennie. She was first jogged around the track in 2min. 19-J-sec, and then the real trial began. She went off like a flash, took a quarter in the half in lmin. and came down the stretch like a tornado, rushing under the wire in 2min I4sec. amidst great applause.
