BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At tho ordinary meeting held on AVeduesday evening present the Mayor and all Councillors —the following business was transacted. Cr Roche, previous to taking his seat made the customary declaration. CORRESPONDENCE. From Under Secretary Public "Works Department, and the Provincial Secretary. " Public Works Office, " Wellington, Gth October 1874. " Sia, —1 am directed by the Hon. Mr Richardson to acknowledge receipt of your letter nf the 10th July, relating to the Coal Quay Reserve and in reply to inform you that by the 7th Section of the Railways Act 1874, the Colliery Reserve at Westport has been vested in the Grovernment as security for tho cost of construction of the Railway from Mount liochfort to Westport, and to state that it is intended to await the completion of Railway before the Government take into consideration any proposal for dealing with such portion of the lands as may not he required for Railway purposes.—l am, &c., "John Knowles. " Gr. Carruthers, Esq , " Town Clerk's office, Westport." " Provincial Secretary's Office, " Nelson, October 14, 1874. " Sir, —In reply to your letter of the 31st inst., I have the honor to inform you that the.re is no vote of £2OO for clearing of Westport streets. You have probably mistaken the £4OO voted for expenditure over the whole province for Roads and Streets (to meet equivalent subscriptions.—l am, <fcc„ " Euo. J. O'Conor, " Provincial Secretary. " Town Clerk, Westport." From T. Watson, asking permission to dig a drain in Russel street, to connect with llenley street drain, and also to form a footpath ; asking also for £3, ■being 50 per cent on the cost of such work. From John M'Lean, requesting permission to use gravel reserve in ballastin? the railway. From John Seaton, asking protective right to construct a public wharf at the end of Henley street, upon terms and specifications to be mutually agreed upon. From John Linley, asking for £lO on account of contract work in Henley street. The Town Clerk was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of the first letter. The second was referred to the Finance Committee. Mr Watson's application was received, and the Public Works Committee authorised t:> pay the £3, on completion of the work specified. The permission solicited by Mr John M'Lean was granted. Mr Seaton's letter was held over for consideration. The payment of £lO to Mr Linley was authorised. WHARVES. Proposed by Cr Sheahan, seconded by Cr Organ, and carried, " That in order to afford greater facilities for shipping visiting the port through tho increased commerce incident to the introduction of Public Works in course of construction for the development of our coalfields, the time has arrived when, in the opinion of this Council, measures should be devised for tho construction of wharves," Proposed by Cr Organ, seconded by Cr Sheahan and carried, " That a Committee to consist of Crs Corr, Sheahan, Munro, and the mover, be appointed to report on the subject of previous resolution and to point out the best means to be employed for erecting other wharves." On the motion of Cr Munro Mr Seaton's letter (previously held over) was referred to this Committee. The wharf Committee appointed to report re negociations with Mr I). M'Leod reported " That after making all necessary inquiry and careful consideration of Mr D. M'Lead's letter, dated October 12th, 1874, offering to sell his wharf property for the sum of £I3OO, the Committee recommend that it is not desirable at present to purchase the wharf now owned by Mr M'Leod." On the motion of Cr Stitt, seconded 1 y Cr Organ, the report was adopted. GENERAL BUSINESS. The motion of which notice had been given by Cr Sheahan "That inasmuch as the river permanent protective works must take at least eighteen months before completion, that during this time the lower end of the town is subject to destruction by the periodical floods, this Council deems it desirable that a respectful address be presented to the . Minister of Public Works for the purpose of gettiug a temporary line of rails laid down to the stone quarry at the end of the Nine-mile Road, so that stone can be brought in for the proposed works, which should be carried ou:. with all necessary expedition," was put, seconded by Cr Organ and carried. j Proposed by Cr Stitt, seconded br Cr ! Organ and carried, "That a Committee 1 consisting of his Worship the Mayor ' and Crs Munro, Sheahan, Munson and I
the mover be appointed to give effect to the foregoing resolution." Proposed by Cr Munro, seconded by Cr Stitt and carried, " That the Town Clerk be instructed to communicate with Provincial Government drawing attention to the dangerous state of the fairway of the river in consequence of the accumulation of snags, and to request that a sum of money be expended in removing the same." The meeting then adjourned.
