INTERPROVINCIAL NEWS.

Municipal honors are deemed of little value in one Borough at least in Otagoi At Naseby three vacancies occurred, and only one nomination was made. Consequently the ratepayers had to fall back upon the 25th section of the Otago Municipal Ordinance, which provides that the ratepayers may nominate whom they choose, and proceed to elect their Councillors, whether they wish it or no. The Bruce Herald says :—Whatever may be said against the immigration arrangements of the Agent-Creneral of this Colony, Dr Fcatherstoue, we gladly learn from a reliable source that, so far as the importation of the necessary material, rolling stock and workshop machinery for the Otago railways, is concerned, everything has been found to arrive thoroughly satisfactorily, and serviceable for the purpose required; so much so, indeed, that £2O will cover the amount of unsuitable mat. lial to hand up to the present time, of the hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of purchases imported to the order of the Agent-General Referring to the proposod combination of the West Coast, Nelson, and Malborough districts as one province or district for amended system of Co vermncnt, the Marlborough Express says : —When Wcstland and Nelson are so continually expressing an anxiety to have the province of Marlborough annexed to them it cannot fail to arouse suspicion aa to the interested nature of

their motives. We cut the folloAving from a late Nelson paper, which speaks for itself: —" The Grey River Argus suggests that if the Premier does not see his way to abolishing the provinces of the Middle Island, he could still bring about a great improvement by amalgamating the provinces of Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland. Any alteration, says our contemporary, must be for tho better." Of course onr contemporary means that it would bo better for Westland, and tho inference is plain that it would bo worse for Marlborough. We do not however think that all the parties would be found willing.
