WESTPORT DISTRICT HOSPITAL.

The adjourned meeting of Committee was held on Tuesday afternoon, at the Court House. All members present; Dr Giles in the Chair. The report of the Sub-Committee ap. pointed to enquire as to the financial position of the Hospital, was brought up, and after discussion was adopted. The Secretary was instructed to give notice to the Surgeon and House Steward, that the reductions on salaries would commence from the Ist October proximo. The Treasurer reported that he had received £IOO on account of government subsidy. Proposed by Mr Whyte, seconded by Mr Andrews and carried:—" That Messrs Eleming, Fielder, Tizard, and Day be a Committee to organise arrangements for a Bazaar to bo held in the. Christmas week, for the benefit of the Hospital Eunds. Proposed by Mr Whyte, seconded by Mr Rowlands, " That the Visiting Committee bring up a report as to the most desirable method of regulating the admission of patients with a view to obtain maintenance contributions. Mr Gilmer gave notice of motion that at the next meeting he would move, " That with a view of putting in force the recommendation contained in the Finance Committee's report as to termination of the financial year, the rule XVI be altered, and the word April substituted for the word July. Mr Tizard gave notice of motion, "That officiating ministers of religion residing in Westport shall be ex ojflcio members of the Committee. He also gave notice of the following motion: — No persons who shall hold any office or place of profit under the Committee, or be concerned or participate in anywise in any contract with the Committee or in the profit thereof, or of any work to be done under the authority of the same, shall be capable of voting, or being, or continuing a member of such Committee, provided that such disability shall not apply to any member of any Company, partnership, or association, consisting of more than twenty persons when such contract shall be entered into for the general benefit of such company, partnership, or association. But no Committee man shall vote or take part in the discussion of any matters in or before the Committee in which he shall directly or indirectly, by himself or his partners, have any pecuniary interest.

It may however be possible that the receipts may be increased to a greater amount than the present estimate. To keep the expenses within estimated limit, it is recommended—lst. That a reduction of salaries be made to the following rates : —House Surgeon, £2lO (to include supply of medicine) ; House Steward, £100; and cook, £OO per annum. 2nd. That the Visiting Committee make searching enquiry with a view of reducing any unnecessary items in the hospital accounts. It is further recommended that greater c.ire be taken in the admission of patients to the hospital, in order to secure contributions from all who may be in a position to make them. And that the current financial year of the hospital and the term of office of the Committee, be made terminable at the same time as the provincial year, in order to facilitate an easier adjustment of accounts. —Yours, &c, E.
