The price is £L6,795 12s. -August 10. Good report continue to arrive from the Greenstone rush. Sixteen claims have bottomed on good gold. Thirty other parties are at work with excellent prospects. The Eev. Father Belliard left here for Christchurch to-day. A magnificient gold watch and an illuminated address was presented to him yesterday. [Per Anglo-Australian Telegraph Agency.] HOKITIKA. August 8. On Friday night the Alhambra from Melbourne could not be tendered here owing to heavy swell on the bar. She proceeded on to Grey mouth. Mr W. C. ".Roberts, for nine years Manager of the Bank of New Zealand for the West Coast, takes management of the Dunedin Branch of the same service in a few days. He was presented at a banquet here with a " souvenir" of plate valued at £250. The banquet was the largest ever held ©n the Coast. POET CHALMERS. August 7. The Beautiful Star has arrived. Captain Hart died at 12.15 a.m., five miles off the heads. CIIRISTCIIUIICH. August 7. The trade societies have resolved to take steps for the establishmcut of a Trades TJniou. £IOO has been subscribed for Captaiu Hart, of the steamer Beautiful Star, whose legs were broken on Wednesday by the snapping of a hawser while towing the Ballochmyle. Quotations —F. 0.8. at Lyttelton ; wheat, 5s to 5s 3d ; oats, 4s 9d; barley, 5s Gd to Gs ; flour £l2 to £l3 ; bran, 6s to Gs Gd ; sharps, 7s. WANGANUI. August 7. Great satisfaction is expressed here at the Premier's announcement re abolition of Provincialism in the North Island.
AUCKLAND. August 7. The consignees of the ship Miltiades have signed a document requesting the arbitrators to furnish their reasons for the large award granted to the salvors. The award caused great astonishment, the evidence showing that when tho Lady liowen put on full steam " ahead" she could not haul the slack of tho warp out of the water, and that the vessel was got off mainly through the kedge anchor being hauled on by the steam winch on board the Miltiades. The Woodbine, from Newcastle, reports that intelligence has been received from tho Palmer Diggings, of extraordinary rich alluvial finds of gold ; some claims getting several hundred ounces of gold weekly. GRAIIAMSTOWN. August 7. Mr Vogel's speech caused great astonishment but was very favorably rccpived, Tho Advertiser urges him not to delay but to go to the country at once with a great and grand scheme of constitutional reform for abolishing the provinces in both Islands and not in tho North one only.
MININa ITEMS. [INANGAIIUA HERALD.] Anderson's.—At a meeting of the directors of Anderson's Goldmining Company, held on the 3rd instant, the mining manager reported that all would be prepared for the renewal of crushing operations by the next Saturday. It was decided to start the batteries once more on Monday, the 10th instant. Fiery Cross.—The reef in the sixtyfeet level is now being opened out. It is three and a half feet wide, showing gold freely in both faces—north and south. Crushing commenced last Thursday. •Idst in Time.—The shaft being finished, the hands are engaged centreing and timbering up, previous to starting a level. "Waliialla.—Tunnel in 400 feet, and the shareholders expect shortly to intercept the reef. Alexandra and Hopeful.—The contractors are getting on well with their new contract in tunnel, though contending with hard driving. Larry's No. 2. —The breakage of the pinion wheel will delay work for a time, although repairs will be attempted without sending to the Nelson foundry. The reef in the first stope south of the old pass is ten feet wide, the stone very dark, and showing coarse gold in the face. The quartz is of a peculiar description—different to anything before crushed io the luangahua—and putting the yield at an ounce, the lowest estimate, it will give a fortune to theshareholders. Caledonian. —Cutting out chamber, getting timber into the shaft, and making general preparations for starting to open the level south. Argyle.—Continuing the curve west, chiving towards the reef According to survey made last week, they have driven within a very few feet of the line of reef, and are likely to intercept it any moment. Golden" Fleece. A reef of upwards of a foot wide is being driven s<long with improved indications, as the party employed penetrate the more solid portions of the lull, and the reef has every appearance of holding. The stone got out contains a fine show of gold. "Wealth of Nations.—On clearing up as usual at end of month (July 31st) 470 ozs. of amalgam was obtained. The supply of stone is ample to keep the machine going. . Inglewood.—One hundred tons of stone are now stored in the main puddock ready for the next c.ushing, which was to commence yesterday. [lxell argus.] Excelsior.—Hard driving in the tunnel necessitates the use of powder. A new feature on the Alpine range. Maruia.—Stone is being got from the three levels, and is coming freely to grass. Preparations are being made for opening out the Smithy leader. Monte Christo.—The value of the recently discovered leader is amply confirmed. Shares are quoted at 4s Gd to ss. B'lEiK o' Day. A stope commenced in No. 4 level will be carried 80 feet to the Maxuia boundary. The leader in the stope and. in the face of tunnel just now varies in thickness from 8 inches to a foot, and contains splendid stone. Blocking out from No. 3 level has been commenced. Shares have had improved enquiry. Little Wonder—-The battery is employed crashing for Mulony and party. The ten heads are at work, and the stone is being passed through with expedition. Boatman's Creek.—A first call of twopence per share is payable on the 12 th iustant.
