FIRE BRIGADE.

[/WESTPORT ETESOTG STAR.] The slight outbreak of fire in Paltnerston street on Tuesday morning has put the Fire Brigade on the alert. At the monthly meeting, held last evening, the subject of water supply was discussed, and it was admitted that between Wakefield and Cobden streets there at present exist no ready means for obtaining water in the moment of emergency. Several pounds have been spent in efforts to obtain water from an Abyssinian well at the intersection of Pakiugton street, but, so far, without success. The funds of the Brigade will not admit of any more experimentalising, and thus other ways and means of securing water supply have to be devised. An excellent suggestion has been made, and will no doubt be carried into effect. Between Wakefield and Pakington streets are surveyed three other streets lines, each leading down to the river bank. The Brigade has in stock a good supply of water hose, both for suction, main, and branch purposes, and it is suggested that if narrow tracks were cleared down each of these streets Hues, sufficiently wide to run the engine down to the river bank, an inexhaustibly abundant supply of water would be always at command, and the safety of property would be assured. It is the intention of the Brigade to apply to the Municipal Council to form such tracks, and as the expense will bo but trifling the favor no doubt will be willingly conceded. The Council, if not able to give a grant sufficient to cover the whole cost, might well afford a grant in aid, and the members of the Brigade would find no lack of volunteer assist* ance to supplement their own work in clearing the tracks. A little time ago some among the lusty youths of Westport proposed to clear a cricket ground in the bush by volunteer labor in spare hours. Now is presented an opportunity for muscular exercise in a more limited degree, but for a none the less useful purpose.
