THE SERMON TRADE.

As an index to the market price of sermons, we give the following from an English ecclesiastical journal: " Sermons. —Good, sound sermons by an experienced clergyman, adapted for the Church's year. Subscription, 13s per quarter. Single MS, for any Sunday, fifteen stamps. SPG, confirmation, hospital, &c, 2s 6d each. Clergy only—address, &." " Sermons. —Sound, practical, arid original. Edited by an Oxford graduate. Strictly confined to trie clergy. M S for the season and SPG (2s Gd) now ready. A specimen, Is Gd ; address, &c." " Sermons.—Earnest, original, practical, upon the Sunday Gospels, Epistles, and Old Testament Lessons, by an experienced priest. Specimens free on approval to clergymen. Sermon for an assize, volunteer corps, &c. Strict confidence- N.B. —These sermons have been higbly commended by many eminent and earnest clergymen; address, &c."

Whatever may be thought of the traffic, it, cannot be said that the charges are exorbitant. Only fancy, a Sunday's edification —hi manuscript too—for fifteen stamps. There is a good opening for a pushing " agent" in New Zealand.

" Why don't you stand up there like a man ? " asked a worthy magistrate of a drunken fellow arraigned before him. " I can stand up well enough" said the fellow, " your honor, but I can't make my boots stand up." A Texas town was recently visited by a clergyman for the first time in its history, and the inhabitants wishing to do the handsome thing by him, offered to pot up a horse race for his entertainment. A Scotch politician heard one day of the death of a party opponent, who, in a fit of mental abberration, had shot himself. ''Ay," said he, " gane awa' that way by himsel,' has he ? I wish he had taeu twa-three days' shootiug amang his froeus afore he went!" A New York publicau announces his establishment in this way : —" Insurance against thirst at fixed premiums, payable in cash." Good ties to keep one's business from going to pieces—Advertise.
