The barque Alma was towed out by the p.s, Residt on Sunday morning for Melbourne direct. Beyond a small quantity of cargo, she has left the port in ballast. The schooner Jessie, from Lyttelton, crossed the bar and sailed up to Wakefield street wharf at 2 p.m. yesterday, after standing off and on from sundown on Sunday, waiting a slant to get in. The brigantine Mary Bamiat.i ne, lately arrived at Hokitika, had a vt ry rough passage of nineteen days from Melbourne ; having been obliged to heave to for three days, and also to throw the deck cargo overboard. On her last trip from Wcstport three stowaways were on board, beside her full complement of cabin passengers. The pon llgnt at the Hokitika signal station has been fitted with gas in lieu of kerosene, and it expected that the change will be advantageous to vessels, as the light thereby secured will bo far more brilliant. At. present the fittings are more experimental than otherwise, but if the new light answers as well as is expected, gas will be permanently laid on.
