CENSUS.
[WESTPORT ETEIfINO STAB.] TnE tables issued by the RegistrarGeneral showing the numbers of the population in Now Zealand, as ascertained by the census taken for the night of the Ist March last, give the following particulars regarding Nelson Province:—The total population, including hplf-castes and Chinese, but excluding aboriginal natives, is 22,5G6 ; this number including 13,555 males, and 9011 females. The population of the respective electoral being as follows : —Nelson city and suburbs —males, 3902 ; females," 3867. Waimea —males, 12-16 ; females, 91S. Part of Cheviot—males, 301< • females, 91. Motueka—males, 1-137 ; females, 1336. Collingwood—males, 766 ; females, 510; Buller—males, 3101; females, 1502. Part of Grey goldfield—males, 2-196; females, 757. The number of half-castes in the province is 28 —twenty-four females and four females; the number of Chinamen, 320. Of these 12 are located at Nelson, 20 in the Buller district, and 288 in the Grey Valley. The number of dwellings in the province is given as 6199, of 472 were on the Ist of March uninhabited, and 24 in course of erection. The dwellings on the Buller goldfield are enumerated as 1720 inhabited, 85 uninhabited, and 3 in course of erection. In Nelson and suburbs the total number of dwelling houses is stated at 1619; of which 210 were uninhabited. The agricultural statistics of the province, as compiled from the returns of tho census collectors, give the number of holdings as 1112 ; extent of newly broken up land, 3788 acres ; and the total number of acres under crop, including sown grasses, 54,697. The estimated gross produce being, of oats, 76,300 bushels ; barley, 20,450 bushels; hay, 3584 tons ; potatoes, 4576 tons; other crops occupying 590 acres. The quantity of last year's crop remaining on hand when the forms were filled up was, of wheat, 1125 bushels; oats, 1197 bushels ; and barley, 15 bushels. The proportion of land in cultivation to the number of population shows but little more than two acres for each person, and of the total area, viz., 54,697 acres, 43,650 acres are laid down in permanent grass.
