PALMER GOLDFIELDS.
The proprietor of the Lyell Argus publishes a lettor dated Cooktown, 20th March, 187-1, and written by a Mr Frederick Green, who some time since left the Lyell for Port Darwin. Instead of going there he diverged to the Palmer and Endeavour liiver, and in his letter relates his experiences. He confirms generally the bad reports recently received, and says : " Steamers and sailing vessels are arriving daily, loaded with passenger.-', the majority of whom proceed to the diggings as soon as landed. The road is lined with them, in fact' there are more people here than the Palmer goldfields can find remunerative employment for, unless sonic more new country is open out. There is no doubt hut that this place has been greatly misrepresented from tho first, and tho quantity of gold obtained has been exaggerated. Hundreds who have been upon tho diggings have returned, and are working passages back to the Southern ports. I would strongly advise people at a distance to remain where they are until more favorable accounts reach them, and provisions arc obtainable at more moderate rates."
