DESTRUCTION op UNION BANK AT GRAHAMSTOWN. AUCKLAND. May 5. A destructive fire occurred this morning. A block of wooden building was destroyed, reaching from foot of Wakefield street to the Pacific Hotel. £IO,OOO worth of property destroyed and fifteen families made homeless, A considerable amount of the loss is uninsured. May G. The total insurance losses are : New Zealand, £G00; Royal, £2300 • South British, ; Victoria, £720 ; Norwich Union, £375; National, £500; Liverpool, London, and Globe, £650; Scottish Commercial, £100; and Imperial, £SOO. GRAHAMSTOWN. May 5. A fire broke out this morning in the melting-house of the Union Bank and communicated with the main building, which was totally destroyed. Damage estimated at £2OOO. May G. The Union Bank was insured in the Royal for £2OO, and Victoria for £2OO. The strong room has been opened, and the books and papers found sound. The assayers lost £SO. The bank loss is £I2OO. A Roman Catholic priest has refused rites of burial to the remains of M'Alliffe, because the deceased had not been at the Easter Communion, and had neglected other duties. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. HOKITIKA. May 5. The steamship Alhambra arrived here to-day. She brings later Engiish and Australian news. MELBOURNE. April 2S. The elections are concluded. M'Culloch had an easy victory over his opponent at Wamambool, but O'Shanassey was beaten by the local candidate. All the Ministers have been re-elected. Langton was returned over bead of Sichel, the free trade candidate. It has transpired that Erancis, Chief Secretary, has thrice declined the offer of knigbthood. It is stated that Sir Arthur Gordon, Governor of Mauritius, succeeds Governor Ducane, in Tasmania. The Albion takes the mails to New Zealand on her arrival. Commercial.—Markets dull. Oats 5s Gid ; wheat, Gs Gd. SYDNEY. April 2S. The Challenger has completed her re-fit, and sails this week. A banquet is intended by the mercantile community to celebrate the abolition of ad valorem duties and the opening of the Californian mail service. ADELAIDE. April 28. Captain Douglas has proceeded to India to arrange for the introduction of Coolie labor for the Northern Territory. All the mines at Wallaroo are again at work. LATEST UNPUBLISHED. BRISBANE. April 28. A number of diggers are still returning from Cooktown. An explosion of fire damp has occurred in the Tivoli mine, at Ipswich. Two men were blown thirty yards up the tunnel and badly injured.
