HOKITIKA RACES.

Second Day. [prom the register.] The weather was a great improvement on the previous day, and, consequently, the number on the course was in excess of the previous day's attendance. The ladies mustered more strongly, and the grand stand was better patronised. The boothholders did a better business than ou Tuesday, and to crown all, the racing was much improved. Five horses came to the post for the District Plate—Wide-awake, Boy in Blue, G-arryowen, North Star, and Hover, Scotty being scratched. Wideawake took the lead, was never afterwards headed, and won a good race by two lengths, Boy in 13!ue running second, and Garryoweu third. Next came the Wcstland Handicap Hurdle Race, for which only two horses started—Tommy Dodd and Boy in Blue. The race, bar accidents, was a certainty to Tommy Dodd. A Hack Race succeeded, for which four horses started, namely, Wide-awake, Rover, Garryowen, and Scotty. Wide-awake, carrying 9st 121b, won a very good race, Garryowen taking second honors, rud Scotty running third. Then followed the great race of the clay—the Wcstland Racing Club Handicap, of 150 sovs—for, which four started, Tatterina, Lacenfeed, Septimus, and Nero, Tatterina was mado favorite, but each of the others found backers, many being particularly sweet on Septimu. 1 , part)y on account of his being a local horse, aud partly from his performance the day previous. Mr Walters's marc justified the opiniou of the cognoscenti by winning easily, notwithstanding her heavy impost of 9st 101b. Lacenfeed ran second, Nero third, aud Septimus last. A Maori Race followed, for which three started, a horse rejoicing in the name of " Tommy" proving Jie winner, atnid the delighted yells of the crowd. A Consolation Handicap was the last event, for which Lacenfeed walked over.
