NORTH NGAKAWHAU COAL.
Au analysis lias been marlo in the Government Laboratorj', at Wellington, of coal taken from the North Ngakawhau mine, on the north banks of Ngakawhau river, and evidently a continuation of the seams previously opened in the Albion Company's mine. The following results arc given : —■ " (A). Scveralsamplcs of bituminous coal having very similar characters. They are brittle, very tender, and of a shaly structure. These coals bear a great resemblance to that occurring at Ngakawhau (i.e., south side of stream), which is of excellent quality. The following are the results of an approximate analysis made upon a few samples : Fixed carbon ... ... 74.11 Hydro-carbon 20.01 Water 82 Ash ... • 5.00 100.00 " The coal puffs up greatly when caked, the ash is of a grey color. Evaporative power 051bs. " (C) The carbonaceous shales are but slightly argillaceous, they contain much mica. (Signed) "W. Skei'."
