Maguire, 107 ; Lash, 98 ; Hayden, 80 ; Jones, 79. April 1. The manager of the Grey mouth Coal Company reports that the coal has been proved in borings at 220 feet in a scam of 17 feet thick and of firstclass quality. He also reports that a quarter of a mile from borings coal has been proved at G5 feet from the surface, and at that spat a shaft is to be started at once. The requisite machinery has been purchased and the Company will be ready to supply coal in three months.
HOKITIKA,. March 31. At the Supreme Court in Banco, Mr Newton, for Hokitika Tramway Company, showed cause against the rule nisi in arrest of judgment obtained at Nelson. Mr South, for Provincial Government, supported rule. Judgment reperved. NELSON. March 31. Stavert and Co. report sale by auction of corn in stack at the late Mr Bedwood's farm, oats, 3s; wheat, ss; barley, 4s per bushel. DUNEDIN. March 31. Mr Macpherson, of Canterbury, addressed a public meeting on Saturday night, and said it was a folly of the Government to induce working men to emigrate from Great Britain in such large numbers; On returning to England he would tell them the truth, and give them words of caution. The North Dunedin telegraph station opens in a week or two, with two young lady operators. WELLINGTON. April 1. The Independent says the cause of delay in publication of Handbook of the Colony is owing to two of the principal provinces not having had their portions ready. It believes tat the intention now is to send the handbook home for publication and distribute it there in large numbers. The portions now wanted of the book are promised in another week. AUCKLAND. March 31. The Star's London correspondent states that the free passage system has resulted in the shipment of an inferior class of emigrants ; and instances passengers by the Dorettc, which left on January 21st, for Auckland, with 340 emigrants. The correspondent states that, with exceptions among the single women, they arc much below the average class. The schooner Marion Benny, from Levuka, has arrived. The captain states that the steamer Macgrcgor has floated off. H.M.S.S. Pearl tried to get her off for several days, but all the strongest warps broke, and she was compelled to desist. Meanwhile 200 tons of sugar and a large quantity of coal were thrown overboard, there being no means of landing cargo ; and the steamer floated off on the 7th inst, by herself. The Pearl having gone to Levuka the Macgregor was taken into safe anchorage in Galoa Bay. She has a hole 12 feet by 3 feet in one forward compartment which is full of water but sheis otherwise uninjured. She will be repaired as well as circumstances will permit, and then taken to Sydney to be docked. The proposed annexation of Fiji is negatived by King and leading chiefs assembled at Bau. There will be fresh elections. April 1. The Mongol arrival without the mail, the City of Melbourne not having connected at Kandavu. The Macgrcgor i 3 still at Kandavu, and is being pumped out night and day. The cause of the City of Melbourne's non-arrival at Kandavu is unknown.
