BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the usual weekly meeting, held on Wednesday last, present —the Mayor, and Crs. Sheahan, Blacklock, Stitt, Suisted, Whyte, and Munson, the following business was transacted : PUBLIC WORKS. A telegram was received from the Provincial Secretary re gravel pits. " Nelson, 31st March, IS7I. " The Government cannot consent to any more gravel being taken from reserve. " AIUBTCD GIIERXFIELU. " Provincial Secretary." It was proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Suisted, and carried unanimously, " That tenderers for work in Palmerston street be informed that tenders cannot be accepted on account of the refusal of the Provincial Government to permit gravel to be taken from the reserve, and that their cheques be returned." Cr. Suisted proposed, and Cr. Stitt seconded " That the Public Works Committee bo instructed to seek the most eligible site for a gravel pit and report on the same at next mooting of the council." Carried unauimously. MEMOKIAL. The memorial of inhabitants in TCArnctfy and AVallabi -streets, ; were iieid over for report of Public Works Committee. ACCOUNTS, An account of George Carruthers, for refund of' ctiutfc eSpeßses,£3 11 6d, was passed fur payment, COUNCIL :.tEET!NGS. On Iho motion of Cr. Whyte, seconded, by Cr. Blacklock, it was

decided that henceforward the council meet once a fortnight, instead of weekly as heretofore. REVENUE. On* the motion of Cr. Munson, seconded by Cr. Suisted, the Town Cleric was instructed to apply to the Provincial Secretary for the fees and fines inflicted in the E.M. Court, Westport. The ordinary meeting then closed.

SPECIAL MEETING. At a special meeting held on the Ist April, in pursuance of notice given by the Mayor, the following by-law was, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Thorpe, carried unanimously : '• The whole of the sub-divi3ions, and parts not sub-divided, contained in the thirteenth schedule to the Municipal Corporations Act, 1867, are hereby adopted in and for the Borough of Westport. 1 '
