A Napier journal states that a new difficulty has arisen in that province with respect to that bungling piece of legislation: '• The Licensing Act of 1573." Three parties who have made applications for licenses for houses now in course of erection, are prevented from obtaining the same through some interpretation which has been put upon it, which neither Magistrate or lawyers can unravel. The opinion of the AttorneyGeneral has been taken on the subject, but he appears to be in as great a quandary as other members of the Bar. A Mr Delvie, of Wanganui, is stated to have grown over a ton of grapes in the open air, in his garden this year. In a recent police case in Auckland there was a long battle on the point of whether certain artificial teeth were necessaries, or whether being front teeth they were mere l }'unnecessary ornaments. The dentist, however, was granted his fees.

The Annual return shewing the quantity of spirits distilled in New Zealand daring the year ended 31st December, 1573, gives the following figures : Quantity received at all bonded warehouses 53,910-2 gallons. Quantiiy taken out of bond for home consumption 60,395'G and for exportation 82'S ; total GO,I"S 4>. Number of gallons remaining in bond, including balance in stock from previous year, 08,622'9 gallons.
