We, the undersigned, ratepayers of the town of Westport, protest against any measures being adopted by the Council which will involve the Borough in debt, except for the purpose of constructing some reproductive works. We beg to express our desire that the Council should devoto the greater part of rates to assist property holders who are prepared to join in making new streets at their own expense, or improving streets already made. Wo also beg to express our regret at finding that the Borough Council are taking no steps to obtain possession of the wharf accommodation both at the upper and lower township making both equally available as a means of revenue, but that instead of doing so and purchasing existing rights the Council seems inclined to encourage the increase of private interests in one particular direction upon the river, as a monopoly which is gradually assuming extravagant dimensions, without giving a return to the public chest or even providing the needful accommodation.
