Harbormaster Captain Leech has placed in position at the Wakefield street wharf a water guage showing the depth of water in the river, ns nffected by the current or rise and fall of the tide. Yesterday it marked a little over fourteen feet of water at high tide, thus indicating tho depth of water on the bar.
The Colonial Government steamer Luna arrived in the river yesterday in charge of Captain Fair-child, on her trip round the coast with a survey party deputed to select lighthouse sites, and also having on board several excursionists. The Luna left the Bluff on the 24th February ; on the 25th was at Otago's Retreat; at Kisbee Lay on the 26th, and Cuttler Cove on the 27th. Strong gales prevented her leaving ; but on the 28th visited Windsor Point and Green Island, to allow nn inspection, with the view of selecting the best site for a lighthouse. After getting away a gale caused shelter to be taken in Northport, Chalky Inlet, and she was detained there until Monday morning. On that day (2nd March) Dusky and Brcaksea Sounds were visited, and Doubtful and Thompson Sounds on tho 3rd. The 4th was spent in Bligh Sound, and the two following days in Milford Sound. Here tho Jessie Niccol. Mr Wood's yacht, was met. On tho 7th left early for Martin's Bay, bat owing to the surf being high could not enter. A gale also .... ~, -f..~.«jv,n j,™.t1,...nil .prevented the Luna leaving Big Jbay, but at live o clock a strong south-west breeze sprung up, and a start was made. Sunday was very fine. The Luna anchored off the Steeples before daylight on Monday, and arrived here at eleven o'clock. The survey party will go down to Cape Foulwiud and select the precise site for the lighthouse, on the area whence timber has been cleared since the last visit of the Luna. The yacht Jessie Niccol, spoken in Milford Haven, belongs to Messrs Niccol Brothers, of Auckland, and has been chartered by Mr Woods for a pleasure trip round tho South Sea Islands, and for the collection of photographs and curiosities. At the Steeples yesterday some good sport was had in shooting seals, and eight or nine were captured, one of which is still alive and lively on board the Luna. The steamer •will leave the Buller this evening, calling at Cape Farewell, and probably Mona Island, and then making direct for Wellington.
