AN ARTFUL DOGER.
lii London, on last Lord-Mayor's Day, never, was t'.icre such a demand for panoramas of the procession. The constant cry was deafening, " Who'll hy a 'rammer ?' Who'll have a pennyrammer, iley colored, and three yards long with a 'kreet portrait of LordMayor Lusk '?" The great demand for this article tempted at least one hawker to attempt a swindle of the most barefaced character on a credulous public. There was one fellow who had brought out his unsold stock of the City progress of the Shah of Persia. " Why, that's the Shah," said a woman to him, as she was on the point of parting with her penuy ; " that's his portrait, I'll swear." " Course it is," returned the audacious vendor, with the utmost gravity, " he's Lord-Mayor this year." " Good gracious me !" said the woman ; " he's worked his way up to that has he ?" "That was his objik in coming over here mum," whispered back the artful one, with the most confidential of winks ; " keep it dark, cos there's not many people knows of it as yet." And she paid her penny and went oft* delighted with her prize.
