"Wine making has become a settled industry in the Dunstan District. At Clyde the local brands of wine are in high favor, and at Cromwell a M. Jules le Fontaine has made this season nearly a thousand gallons, A scheme has been floated in the Mount Ida district for investment iu station property. A correspondent of the Southern Mercury says :—A public meeting has been held whereat the vague prospect of pastoral proprietors' glories acted as a charm on the few who attended. A Provisional Committee was appointed to prepare prospectus, &c, and the necessary practical step was taken to obtain the signatures of those who would guarantee the preliminary expenses. If enthusiasm will carry a movement through to a success the company should get a footing, but your correspondent remembereth a proverb which advises the cobbler to stick to his last, aud mediateth thereon, Business firms at Quecnstown are offering Gd per oz. advance on the price given for gold by the banks. Some station property iu the Wakatip District, known as Eernhill Station, bought some time since by Mr Larnich, Banking Manager, of Duuedin, for .£3,000, was sold by him the other day for £6,000. Up country races in Otago havo nearly all proved partial failures. The attendance of visitors was very small compared with previous gatherings, and the intense heat and dust spoiled all enjoyment. At the Dunstan the thermometer stood at 97 in the shade, Complaints are agaiu made that the residents of Martins Bay are getting starved out awaitiug supplies, long promised but not coming to hand. The Superintendent of Otago intends visiting Martin Bay on the next trip of the Luna along the coast, for the express purpose of determining what shall be done with the settlement, whether to abandon it or push on the means of communication with Lako "Wakatip. The country between Martin's Bay and the Lake District is said to be good and the timber resources magnificent.
