The special constables and police are afraid to act. Every man in the Fire Brigade refused to act as special constables. An article in the Examiner has aroused the indignation of the public. The Editor of the Mercury has been roughly handled by the mob, who got a rope and threatened to hang him. He received an anonymous letter threatening his life.
A proclamation has been issued waruing all peaceable citizens to keep out of the streets at night! Great excitement still prevails. The rioters threaten to burn down the railway station. A warm tion awaits them if they attempt it.
