JOURNALISTIC ENTERPRISE.
Emboldened by Mr Stanley's success, Mr Gordon Bennett, of the New York Herald, has determined to penetrate, bj deputy, to the North Pole, as he did the wiJds of Central Africa. The consigne is brief and to the purpose—- " Discover the North Pole, and spare no expense." If the Times does not make haste and anticipate the Herald in the Northern Hemisphere, it will have to tackle a job far tougher, as we are told, and " do" the South Pole. The project of an English expedition at the public expense, though apparently warmly "approved by the public, and declared possible and necessary by the scientists, still hangs fire. Many problems of magnetism and geodesy of the first importance await their decision in the polar regions. Englishmen led the way, will they now drop behind ? >
