COST OF TELEGRAPH MESSAGES.
A recently-published Return shows that the total number of messages of all kinds sent during the year 1873 Was 72,119, and that the cash receipts for the same period amounted to £G,089 14s lOd, giving an average of Is per message. It may be useful to compare this with the average cost of telegraph messages in other countries. In Great Britain the average per message is Is 2Jd ; in France, Is 2d ; in Italy, Is 4d; in Germany, lid ; in Belgium and Bavaria, Bd. Taking into consideration the smallness of our population, as compared with European countries, and the greater expensiveness of everything in the Colonies, New Zealand compares favorably in this matter. It is worthy of remark that in the only country where the telegraph lines are in the hands of private companies—the United States—the average cost of messages is 70 cents, or 2s lid each.
