CHARLESTON MAIL SERVICE.

(To the Editor of tlie Westport Times.)

SiR, —In the Buller News issue of tho slh instant, appears an article referring to the present mail contract between Westport and Charleston. Now I should like to know what that organ has to do with the Charleston portion of the mails. It would appear to me that the Buller News is under a compliment to the present mail contractor, or else the Editor would never have taken up the question for that individual. In the second place, Ido not believe that the Editor has ever taken the trouble to enquire whether the mail contract was ever carried out satisfactorily or not. t -No\v_ can the Editor of the Buller News inform mo why there was no mail from Westport delivered in Charleston from 31st December to 3rd January, or whether it is a fact that the mail from Charleston to Westport (about tho same dato) was entrusted to the charge of a private individual, and hung on a pole on the Charleston race course for some hours, or, whether the present contract provides that the Charleston mails should be detained in a stoic at Addison's Elat all night. I consider of impudence on the part of tiio Editor of the Buller News taking up a public matt' r of that sort, for a private individual, witiiou! fist making all enquiries. And in conclusion, allow me to inform the Buller News that the people of Charleston, who appear so intent on doing mischief, will not allow themselves to be jumped upon by tho Buller News or the Mail Contractor, and they still say that the present mail contract is not doing them justice, and in all probabil ty is not lulfilled in accordance with the terms of coutiact.

I am, &c,

ONK OP THE PiiOPit, Charleston, 6th Feb., 1574.
