Duke and bride proceed to Moscow ;>ud England ear'y in March. Chief Justice Coekburn fined Mr Whalley 250s for contempt, and for refusing to pay Whalley was imprisoned, but released on payment. The Pope is reported as unwell. Liverpool wool sales ruled a Id to I|d lower ; but closed with better prospects. Colonial arrivals, 50,000 bales. Corn market quiet. Adelaide wheat scarce, 70s to 725. Parliament is to be dissolved, and election to take place immediately for new Hous-j to assemble in March.
In an address at Greenwich, Mr Gladstone stated, since their defeat on the Irish Education question, the Ministry was not strong enough to carry any great legislative measures. Dissolution he said was the only remedy for present unsettled state of things. Estimates so far enabled him to promise a surplus of five millions. He intended to abolish income tax, revise local taxation, and repeal duties on certain articles of consumption. Bills to amend Education Act, improve system of local government, amend game, land/ and liquor laws had heeu introduced. ,
Disraeli criticises the conduct of Ministers. He alleges they adopted this policy to avoid explanation regarding Ashantee war, and maintains that Gladstone ought to show more energy in foreign policy. The Conservatives are not afraid of the result of the elections. Featherstone has received decorationof St. Michael and Sc. George. January 27. News from Singapore state that Dr Livingstone died of dysentery at Lake Bemba, after wading four days through water. H.M. Clio arrived at Portsmouth on the 24th. Frere and Kirk, at the meeting of the Geographical Society doubted the death of Livingstone. Troops are advancing steadily on Coomassie —health good. BLUFF. February 5. The s.s. Alhambra, Captain Sinclair, left Melbourne at 2.30 p.m. on the 31st, and arrived here at 5 p.m. on the sth. LONDON. January 29. Mr Hawkins has concluded his reply in the Tichborne case. Chief Justice Cockburn has commenced his summing up, which is expected to occupy a fortnight. The body was preserved in salt by his native servants, who proceeded with it to Zanzibar.
