THIS CRICKET MATCH.

Puuctual'y lit eleven o'clock yesterday morning the Charleston ami VV export teams met on the convincing ground at Orawaiti, and Mr Pearon, captain of the Westport team, having won the cxistoinary toss, elected to send the Charleston men first to the wickets. The day being fine and the ground being in good condition, owing to the welcome rain that fell on Sunday, the friendly match eventuated under thoroughly enjoyable circumstances. A very ■ fair sprinkling of spectators watched the progress of the contest with unflagging interest, nearly all the town residents keeping holiday, and many visitors coming in from the environs. The Westport Brass Band was on the ground, and at intervals throughout the day rendered musical selections, adding not a little to the pleasure of holidaymakers. Messrs Andrews and Mansfield were umpires, and discharged their somewhat onerous duties to the perfect satisfaction of all concerned. The elevens were very evenly matched, and their play throughout was good considering the roughness of the ground aud the very evident lack of previous practice on the part of the majority of the players. The Westport men excelled in fielding, and the Charleston men at batting and bowling. In the evening the elevens and their friends met at the Post Office Hotel and partook of dinner, served up in Host GHlinor's best stylo. Compliments thereon are unnecessary, the viands, wines, aud confections were each and all most excellent, and the encomiums passed by the guests were most flattering to the caterer. The customary toasts wore pledged, neat speeches made, and the evening spent in thorough harmony.
