QUEENSLAND.
The doctor of the Great Britain died suddenly at Brisbane. Parliament lias been opened by commission, and Mr Walsh chosen Speaker. When the Assembly met, Mr Palmer, the Colonial Secretary, said that the election of Speaker was tantamount to a want of' confidence, and he had tendered his resignation and that of his colleagues. He would agree to give six months' supply to his successors. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. A deputation from the Northern Territory mining companies has requested tho Government to introduce 200 coolies as an experiment. They also asked for a reduction in the over laud telegraph charges ; and to both applications favorable consideration | was promised.
The weather has been excessively hot, and fires in the country are of daily occurrence. At Willunga there has been considerable destruction of property on the farm lands, and several families have been burnt out. The extreme heat has necessitated the use of punkahs in Church.
