SPORTS.

[w EST I'O ItT KVEN IN a STAB.]

The very qualified success attending the local sporting events of the Christmas season has given rise to an expression of opinion by many—who, their qwii credit and the good name of the town, desire, to avoid the failure of wellintentioned efforts—that in future horseracing may be very prudently omitted from any Christmas programme'and the public contributions devoted to better prizes for athletic sports than are now offered. Christinas is not the time for horse'-racing. Holiday keepers would be more content with less ambitious efforts on the part of "sports" proinoters, and would willingly leave racing events for more appropriate season, lieference to this subject is made is no, invidious spirit, but merely that, just now, before sporting men disperse to their own homes, a little friendly discussion may be held as to the feasibility and ways and means of organising a properly constituted and permanent Jockey CJuJjj having as a chief duty the arranging for an Annual District Kafce Day, to intervene the larger annual events at Nelson, Greymouth, and elsewhere. It seems not improbable that good subscriptions would be ensured, and the Club would be enabled to offer prizes not unworthy of contest by horses of good repute on their way to or from larger meets. Neither town or district would lose by contributing liberally to the funds for giving one day's , legitimate racing, and the local patrons of the turf would be spared the chagrin of seeing a programme of small events ruthlessly cut into smaller fragments, to ; the dissatisfaction of all concerned. At Christmastide athletic sports: alone, in or near the township, and races on St. Patrick's Day, would be found an improvement on present arrangements.
