The steamer Goahead arrived from Wanganui on Friday morning at two pVock, haying left Wnnganui on the previous Saturday. Captain il'Gillivary made his presence known in the roadstcid' by firing a gun, and shortly afterwards the sound of his whistle in tho river told he had crossed the bar in s-'fefcj. Tho Goahead bad an exceedingly rough voyage. She got-as far as Totoramii, lay to there for 24 hours, and then made the Spit, found the weather threatening and sea rough, and 'put back again'for the sake of saving lives among the cattle freight. Hero Captain M'GilHvary sent, his crew ashore to get meadow grass as bedding and forage for cattle, and on the weather moderating got again under steam and'canvass, and brought bis vessel into port without losing a single head among his freight, a feat almost unparalleled in -coasting ventures, considering the length of the passage and rough weather prevailing. An incident occurred on tho trip-vdiieh may be termed a lucky accident. A horse carried on tho foredeck lost bis footing during a heavy lurch of the vessel, and was thrown clean through the companion skylight right into the forecabin without receiving the slightest injury. It" was impossible, of course, to get him back the way he came, nor had ho been trained to travel -up stairs. As it happened there was a moveable bulk-head between tho cabin and fore-hold, and this •wa-s removed, and the animal shifted therein, and thus for the remainder of the voyage got drier quarters than a deck passage.
