HONESTY TRIUMPHS.

One of the healthiest signs of the times in the United States is the reelection of Mr Washburn as Governor for the State of Massachusetts, and the consequent rejection of General Butler's pretentions to that distinguished honor. There were three candidates in the field, and the whole of them were Republicans ; but the contest lay in reality between the two we have named ; and it is no figure of speech to say that the eyes of the whole Union were fixed upon the proceedings of the State convention which met at Worcester to make the nomination. For the question at issue was not the personal qualities of the two men, nor was it in any sense of the word a party conflict, because both belonged to the same political organisation. Great principles were at stake, and the action of the convention was watched with the deepest interest, because men felt that the renomination of the ex governor would constitute a turning-point in the political history of the country. He was the representative of public morality, honesty, and decency; while his opponent was identified with the cause of corruption, demoralisation, and profligacy.
