The tug-steamer Dispatch came up from Hokitika on Tuesday afternoon, and after running up to the C.obden street wharf, and putting tho Melbourne and southern mails ashore, steamed back and towed in the Alma up to Wakefield street wharf, where she is now discharging cargo.. The Alma left Melbourne on the 53rd ultimo, clearing Port Phillip Heads on the 24th ; and from that date until dropping anchor off the Buller met with fair weather and light easterly winds. The passage, though tedious, being a most pleasant ono for passengers.
The screw st3am launch Bella, built to order at Auckland for harbor service at Napier, when on her trial trip steamed at the rate of nine knots an hour. The engines working splendidly. Her estimated stowage room is eighty pressed bales of wool. The vessel was built, and fitted ready for sea in eight weeks from the sign-, in«jr of the contract. The Bella is said to be ■a thoroughly staunch steamer. An additional shifting beacon has boon erected on the North Head, Port of Wanganui; and masters of vessels crossing tho bar by day are instructed to keep the beacon and signal mast in one, and take signals from semaphore. At night a moving green light will bo used in lieu of the semaphore ; and masters of vessels arriving off'tho bai are instructed to burn flash or blue lights to make their positions known at tho look-out station. These now signals will be used on and after tho Ist January, proximo.
The Otago Guardian says that an iron steamer could be built in Dunedin at a much less cost than it could bo brought out from England, either wholo or in part.
Coals are now soiling by Messrs Chesney and Co. at Hokitika, for 20s per ton from .ships side.
