BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Council met on Wednesday evening as usual, and adjourned until Thursday. At the adjourned meeting, present: the Mayor, and Crs. Munson, Thorpe, Whyte, Organ, and Sheahan, the following business was transacted: — A telegram was received from the Provincial Secretary stating that particulars would be forwarded per next steamer relating to rights of protection granted on the Westport colliery reserve. A letter from the Colonial UnderSecretary, acknowledging receipt of memorial from the inhabitants of Ngakawhau and Mokihinui, and informing the Council that the subject would recoive attention. A letter from the Town Clerk of Greymouth re sales of land within Muni( boundaries in the county of West'and. A letter from the inhabitants of Kennedy street in reference to new sections to be given occupiers in that locality.
Proposed by Cr. Whyte, seconded by Cr. Thorpe, and carried unanimously, "That in reference to the application of the residents situated between Kennedy and Wallabi streets a notice be inserted in the Westport Times informing them that the Council will receive applications for sections from those whose claims are not yet satisfied. In reference to the Committee, Messrs Organ, Whyte, and Humphrey, ap. pointed to co-operate with the Local Board re alteration of the Buller road it was stated by the Mayor that the District Engineer had been waited on, as was also his Honor the Superintendent, who had promised that the matter should receive favorable consideration, and that he would authorise a line to be cut preliminary to survey. The Committee appointed to wait upon his Honor the Superintendent stated that they were informed by his Honor that the Borough Council had now full power over the Municipal Reserves, but that other reserves were in the hands of the General Government Consideration of the By-laws was adjourned until the next meeting. Au account from Mr Munson, £6 Gs 6d, for stationery was passed for payment. Mr Clarke's account (£2l) for valuation, and Mr Lloyd's (£3O) for same were held over. Proposed by Cr. Sheahan, seconded by Cr. Whyte, and carried, " That valuation returns should be received and consideration thereof held over till next meeting so that Finance Committee might report on same. The valuation as prepared by Messrs Clarke and Lloyd is a follows : Property on Coal Reserve £7BBO 5s Freehold ... 4337 10 Native property ... ... 199 15 Total 12117 10 Notices of Motion. By Cr. Whyte : That an application be made to the Waste Lands Board to recommend the General Government to make out Crown Grants of the Municipal and Colliery Reserves to the Borough Council. By Cr. Thorpe : That the resolution of Council referring to the making of that section of Bright street between Queen street and Palmerston street, and postponing the same until after the completion of other works therein specified be rescinded, and that the section of Bright street be undertaken simultaneously with the work specified in such motion.
