UP THE NINE MILE.
( To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Sir,—Now that the Nine-Mile Eoad is about finished, or will be Within *■, month or so, after being on hands i' * about eight months, (although the work might have been completed in half that time), the punt at the Nine-Mile is the one thing most needed. The public opinion is that it should be in course of erection long before this time, and that there should be a boat on the fei'ry now for the accommodation of foot traffic, but instead of that there is no punt in course of erection, nor boat in attendance; nor as far as can be learned has any protection been granted yet to any one, although there has been several applicants Perhaps it is that the Government either intend keeping the protection to themselves, or else keep the road shut up as they did with the Charleston road. It is to be hoped that our local Ptoad Board will take them itter in hand, an I look after the public interest, as the present Governmenthave forgot all about us; but how can we expect anything else when they ar± so taken up with the Wangapeka district. By the last balloon accounts it is reported that in the event of the H Lion " taking charge of public affairs, the Curtis lot will go to Wangapeka, make their pile, and leave the c mntry. —I am, &c, I. O.
