Mr Samuel has concluded arrangements re Pacific mail service. He shortly leaves for the United States. It he completes his business in time he will return to Sydney by the steamer Macgregor. New interest is added to the Tichborne case by John Lina, the stewart of the barque Osprey, deposing with great circumstantiality to picking up a boat containing the Claimant off the Brazilian Coast in the spring of 1854. He further deposed that the Osprey took the Claimant to Melbourne. The evidence closed with great sensation. The rigorous enforcement of law against Roman Catholics in Germany has caused the Pope to write to Emperor William, urging a relaxation of severity. The Emperor has replied that the Roman Catholics in his Empire are an organised political party sowing religious discord, and that the attitude of the Catholic clergy amounted to open revolution.
