DOINGS IN COUNCIL.

(To the Edittr of the Westport Times.) '*' BUT, MASTEIts, KEHBMBER THAT I AM AN ASS ; THOUGH IT BE NOT WRITTEN DOWN, YET FORGET NOT THAT I AM AN ASS." Sir, —Perusing with wonder Cr. Munson's " explanation," I have bethought me much whether Job Lushanus, casting about for some great 'and noble example whereon to model •his actions in his new found office, hath not chosen even the redoubtable Dogberry, and joined with him in aspiration =to be esteemed. Truly it hath been said "that the freaks of men dressed in brief "authority maketh even angels weep. Poor Job Lushanus, thy dignities press heavily ! The quondam town tintinna"bulist, raised—shall I say pitchforked—to a seat in the Town Council, must no longer be approached too familiarly, but must be petitioned! Humbly '•petitioned •! Print it in large print, .good printer, I pray thee. Will his serene mightiness, Job Lushanus the First, condescend to indite another mandate to his humble ■lieges, bearing his sign manual, -and setting forth the exact and precise form of prayer that Would meet with 'his serene approval. I had bethought me, in my simplicity, that of" petitions " Westport had enow. That the petition "mongers' occupation 'had departed, and that in the new Town Council "would be found men of action, men of sense, men of business, who, having public work to do, would do it, 'to the avoidance of 'all'"circumlocution. But I fear me much that the hope 'hath 'been too willing, and that in the Council are even some to whom talk is : as the dearest 'privilege, to whom actual 'work is as something 'to be abhorred, ; and who, grasping office to serve their 'own . ends and exalt their own little 'dignities, will, ere long, bring Municipal Tule to scorn and derision. Yours, &c.-, Smi'f.
