THE NEW SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.
The following telegram has been received by the Government:— "Russell to Vogel.—August 27. Have agreed with Samuel, subject to satisfaction of New South Wales Government and New Zealand Parliament, as follows :—Twelve knot service for six years by New South Wales and New Zealand conjointly, to be commenced within twelve months. Boats 2500 tons gross, or equal to 2000 tons
register, all of same size and power, for service via Kandavan, thirteen round trips. Terminus and departure alternately Sydney and Dunedin via Coast service Transhipments alternately for Sydney and New Zealand at Kartdavan. Contractors to have all subsidies except from British Government and Colonies. Now Zealand and New South Wales pay £IO,OOO each. Cost thus to New Zealand, £23,000, subject to further reduction by half of any contributions from other Colonies. lam satisfied with Contractors. If yoit agree to foregoing, Samuel and myself will arrange temporary ten knot service; first steamer from Colony in December. This is best arrangement I can make, and strongly recommend its adoption. Parkes will telegraph you his reply." ; ' Colonial Secretary, New South Wales, to Vogel.—Letter to your Government this day on London agreement. Have telegraphed to London our concurrence."
