The schooner Sea Bird, reported to have left Melbourne a month since for Greymou hj, appears, from latest Melbourne files, to have cleared at the Customs on tho 27th ult.. and probably sailed within tweuty-fuur hours afterwards.
A very graceful and appropriate acknowledgement of the valuable services rendered by Captain Carey on the occasion of the Kangitoto's wreck, was made by the owners of the unfortunate steamer, Messrs M'Meckan, Blaekwood, and Co., by the lust trip of the Albion to Welliuglon. It consists of a very handsome gold hunting chronometer, by Kirkpatriok, ot London, valued at J563, which was presented by their agent, Mr Bishop, to Captain Carey. It bears the following inscription : "Presented to Captain 11. Carey by M'Meckan, Blackwood, and Co., for his generous and manly conduct in rendering prompt assistance at the wreck of the s.s. Wangitoto in July, 1873." Certainly no testimonial was ever more thoroughly deserved than this, and we are very pleased to see that Messrs M'Meckan, Blackwood, and Co. so promptly and spontaneously recoguised the fact. The s.s. Otago will be ready to t*ke her place in the Melbourne and New Zealand trade in November next. She is now receiving a most extensive overhaul, with new boilers of greater steam power than she possessed before, and on her re-appearance in these waters will probably be pronounced one of the fastest :and finest boats that ever traded here. It is ■understood that she will be under the command of Captain John M'Lean, and that the engine-room will be in charge of Mr Hobert.-on, who. some time ago, was second engineer of the Kangitoto. The cargo of the ship Dallam Towers, amounting to about 2000 tons, is to be brought down to Duuedin by Messrs M'Meckan, Blackwood, and Co.'s steamers. 'The s.s. Omeo will make a special trip to Dunedin, bringing down about. 1000 tons of it. She will return to Melbourne direct from J)itnedin. The Otago Times learns that, by telegram received in town recently, Messrs Shaw. Savill, and Co., have reduced their freights from London to New Zealand to 30s per ton.
