ROADS AND NOT BRIDGES.

(To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Sib,—Having lately read of the Nelsou Government being about to still further (with their increasing liberality) increase our road accommodation in all directions, may I trespass a few suggestive hints for the public good I have lately had business entailing a journey to Eeefton and Charleston, and was told that I would find a good road through to either place. So far correct, but to my perfect astonishment I found that although so much has been expended on both roads that to add a little excitement and relieve a traveller from the ennui of such monotonous journeys, a little creek called the Little Ohiki, on the road to Eeefton, has often detained men on important business, and interrupted their journey right through, the only obstacle in going to Eeefton or the Lyell. So the moral is that a road costing some thousands of pounds is in a state of ineompletness, for the expenditure of a few pounds for which I am told a small wire suspension bridge could be made- Turning south the same thing occurs on the new road to Charleston, as both the Mountain creek and Totara, from the same weakness, deprive the traveller in wet weather from getting through with expedition, but as the road is not finished it is to be hoped before its completion the Government may see the propriety of correcting the inconvenience- Tours &cUncommercial Traveller.
