The enquiry into the grounding of the s.s. Ladybird lias closed, and the certificate of Captain Daniels has been suspended for twelve months. The Bench further stated that as the costs incurred by Captain Daniels had been very heavy, justice would be fairly met by makiu" no order for costs against him. Further particulars of the acaideutto the s.s. Claud Hamilton, have come to hand. Apparently one resistless wave effected the ■work, breakiug on the stai board side, carrying away the bulwarks and tearing up from over the companion the deck house in which Captain Bowse's berth was placed, hurling it over the port bulwark into the eea at the time the unfortunate inmate was wrapped in sleep. At the inquiry held at Nelson, it appeared that the last words the Captain used on leaving the deck was to the chief officer Mr C. Christie, telling him to let the boat run. The chief engineer also deposed that he had asked the chief officer if the ship was to be hove to, and the reply was that the captain had given orders to keep running on. The man at the wheel gave evidence as to having heard the captain cooey twico after being washed overboard, Tho decision given by the Collector of Customs w:',s, " That it is possible the late master committed an error in judgment, considering the bad state of the ■weather, in not having the vessel hove to, and that no blame can be attached to the present master or crew, and I am further of opinion that as the late master lost his life by the accident any further or formal enquiry would be of no service."
