An influential meeting has been held to consider the question of harbor improvements. Resolutions were passed in favor of circulating the late Mr Balfour's report on the harbor, and requesting the Government to make a thorough survey of the harbor, and to bring from 'England an engineer acquainted with the process of dredging. The meeting also passed a strong resolution condemning the Government for persisting in the erection of railway workshops at Mussel Bay. The resolution has been telegraphed to the whole of the Otago members, with a request that they will take steps to have the
building's removed to Dunedin. A Western paper acknowledges the receipt of a Chicago paper, Heavenly Tidings, asking an exchange. It denies the request, for the reason that it is " not in the habit of looking to Chicago as the source of tidings of that nature." The Philadelphia Medical Times reports that a student undergoing his examination, was asked what was the mode of action of disinfectants. He replied : '* They smell so badly that the people open the windows, and the fresh air comes in." A Grate Nuisance.—A smoky chimney.
