The Examiner of tho 23rd instant reports that Messrs N; Edwards and Co.'s smart little steamer Charles Edward, which has just had a complete overhaul, had a trial trip in the bay on tho 22nd. All her machinery worked smoothly and well, and she did a mile in five and a-half minutes. Next week she will resume her running to the West Coast. The Melbourne papers of the Bth inst. report the total wr. ck or foundering of I he brigantine Mary. She was formerly owned by Messrs Spence Bros , and used to trade to this cast. It appears she left Newcastle on tiie 7th, fully laden witli a cargo of coals, and when off Red Head, a point distant from Newcastle about twelve miles, was suddenly struck by a squall and was observed to go down. The steamer Bungaree was despatched to her assistance, but could not discover any vestige of the wreck or the crew. Tho weather on that coust for some time has been reported as extremely adverse to vessels trading to and from the dsfferent ports Tho storm sipnal system has been reduced to such a nice point, in England, that when the -storm ball is sun up at Greenich, it is telegraphed to every port in the Kingdom. Any vessel that leaves the port after the ball is up for bad weather, forfeits its insurance iu case K>f mishap.
