CLEANLINESS AND GODLINESS.
(To the Editor oj the Westport Times.)
Sir, —Many of your readers must have read the extent to which the Dutch people carry their habits of cleanliness. At one time it was considered the height of impropriety at Amsterdam to expectorate in the street. What must these good people have said or done had any one dared to spit in their churches, particularly if the filthy expectorant had moistened his mouth with tobacco, and squirted his nauseous spittle over the floor? The virtuous Dutchman must have pilloried the desecrator—and served him right! Now Mr Editor there are two or three people worshipping at a certain church in Westport guilty of this most contemptible practice, very much to the annoyance and discomfort of their fellow worshippers. Now this is to give warning that if the vestry of that church does not provide spittoons for these people; or those peculiar christians themselves do not eschew their disgusting habits of chewing tobacco and spitting on the church floor during divine service, I shall report their names to " A Parishioner," and have them published forthwith. I am, &c, Dutchman.
