THE NEW TARIFF.

.. [WELLINGTON EVENING JO'ST.] Below we publish a full comparative' statement showing the increase of the new duties as cdmpared with those 1 previdusly charged on the same goods. The first column' shows the duties actually paid during the year IS7I-2i on the various articles Imported and cleared direct from the' ship. The se'cdnd column shows the duty which would been charged 1 had Mr l Vogel's new, tariff been id operation laist year; The extra atridUiit of duty would; however, actually have' been' larger' than we shown,- as owing td the' way in which the Official Customs returns are compiled, we have been unable to include goods which were warehoused and afterwards cleared for home consumption: We have for convenience sake omitted shillings and pence ffdm the calculation. It will be seen that the new tariff almost exactly doubles the duty ih nearly every case. The only reduction 1 is ori" the' item ot confectionery:—

It will be seeri from the above that under this new tariff, passed only " top the sake of convenience and uniformity," even if the consumption 1 of the articles dealt with does not in the current year exceed that of 1871-2, excluding all goods warehoused before being cleared, the revenue will be increased by the sum' of £8 , 1,422 12s. The new tariff, therefore, shows &ri increase of £845 4s above 100' per' cent all round.
